Crating is the best and fastest way to teach a dog to be house broken. Make sure it is just enough room for him to move around, but not too big. A dog will not potty where they sleep, but if the cage is too big they will go to the other side to potty. Keep him on regular scheduled outings at least four times a day. Make sure that he goes out after each feeding, and when they wake from napping.Always supervise your puppy and praise him when goes potty outside. Works best if you carry along a special treat for doing his business outside. No treat if doesn't go when out. He will get the idea quick.

Taking the dog outside every 3-5 hours is good. Also associating a word with going to the bathroom is also good, that way if you say the word and the dog responds, you know it's time to go potty. I would also suggest crate training, it works wonders.

Research crate training. It works wonders. Yes you should have done it before, but it's not too late now... don't worry! If you started him on puppy pads it will be harder to potty train him outside. Once you start the crate training, hang some bells on the door you go through to take him out. Hang them low enough to reach his nose. Make him ring them (use a treat for a while) before you take him out. Soon he wil learn that bells = open door = outside = potty. Sounds complicated, but it's not. Our Chow Mix learned it in a week, and my pug finally rang to go potty every time today after 3 weeks. It may or may not be fast. Potty training can take time. Good luck. Be consistant and it will work faster!
