What is the best way to potty train a puppy? |
Vany asked:
First of all I want to say thank you to everyone that helped me when i was asking about my pregnant dog. She had nine healthy pups, from this am planning on keeping one, both my dogs were already potty trained when I got them. So am wondering what is the best way to potty train my pup? Are the puppy pads useful?

I have heard of several different ways. I have a miniature dog and I am not home enough to take her out as often as I need to and am scared of the dark. I don’t take her out at night. She is trained to the puppy pads and that is all she has ever used and she is a year old. Since it sounds like you have the availability to take your dogs out then I would kennel train them. You can google this method. I have heard this works quite often. I do not like this method it seems cruel to me but, it is very popular.
Hi,
Housetraining a puppy involves clear, consistent communication. You may think you’re being obvious when you tell your puppy to eliminate outdoors, but remember that you two don’t naturally speak the same language. Here are some tips for success:
* Decide what you want and be consistent. If you you’d like your puppy to only eliminate outdoors, don’t introduce indoor techniques, such as newspapers or potty pads. Mixing and matching methods will just confuse your puppy.
* Keep realistic expectations. In general, puppies six months and younger must have a midday potty break. If you have a toy breed puppy, she may need even more frequent breaks.

I agree with not introducing indoor training aids such as potty pads, etc.. The best way to achieve housetraining results is to be consistent with your method. Follow these tips and your dog will soon realize where the “potty” is:
*Puppy should be kept in kennel when you are away from home. The restricted space, which icludes the puippy’s food/water, will not invite elimination since dogs naturally avoid soiling their living/eating areas
*Because your dog will “hold” their bladder, etc., the first place both of you go when you arrive home is outside to the “potty” area
*After puppy has played/relaxed and they are ready to lay around and veg., they should be back in their kennel
*Every 2-4 hours, depending on the size of the dog and water consumption, repeat the first step
Remember that consistency is key to achieving results in a timely manner. Also, remember that once this learning foundation is achieved, it won’t be necessary for your puppy to spend so much time in his/her kennel. Spending this relaxing time in the kennel WILL prevent MOST accidents as long as you are consistently taking the puppy out to eliminate.
Good luck and enjoy your companion. I’ve noticed that people are much happier with their dogs when time has been taken to teach them what is acceptable. It helps both the dog and owner.
