Jordan B asked:

I just got a 12 week year old puppy that is half Chiwahua and half Yorkie and even when I sit outside with her it seems she doesn’t go to the bathroom until she is in her kennal or inside the house. I need the most effective and quickest way to potty train her.

  1. a dog will never deficate or urinate where they sleep, small kennel in the house, at night,, and in the morning let him out right away…. he will go

  2. Take her our every hour. Go to the same spot and STAY there until she goes: ask her to “go potty” or “get busy”. When she goes, praise her abundantly. (after a year my dog will go on command, even if I take him to a new spot). Then walk her to another designated spot and do the same: she will sniff and smell and pull to get away, but if you hold steady she will run out of smells and go. Take her out every time you are done playing, whether it is play indoors or outdoors, take her to the spot. Withhold water after the evening meal so her bladder does not fill overnight and cause accidents: keep her in kennel whenever you have other tasks where you cannot keep a constant eye on her. Remember, little dog, little bladder. Go often, be consistent and be patient. (And get mom and dad to purchase a small carpet shampoo machine because there will be accidents along the way: don’t reprimand. Don’t stick noses in puddles.) Keep accidents cleaned up immediately and thoroughly. It can be frustrating the first several months, but be consistent and you will be rewarded.

  3. I just answered this but here we go again…

    1. Get a crate make it small enough so the dog can only stand up turn around & lay down. If it’s bigger, she will *** in one end and sleep in the other.

    2. Do not ever train your dog to *** on papers or puppy pads… this teaches them to *** in the house…. not what you want.

    3. Put her on a schedule, and adhere to it. Feed and potty at the same times every day. Only give water at mealtimes.

    4. Remember, what goes in— must come out… A puppy can only hold their bladder for as many hours, as she is months old… so… she’s 2 months old, she can only hold it for

  4. Give her a treat every time she goes outside. When in the house, if she is not in her kennel, have her on a leash so you can watch her body language constantly and hopefully catch her before she has an accident. Disciplining some dogs will have the opposite effect. ie: yelling at her for going potty in the house may make her think she is getting yelled at for going potty at all and may be scared to go infront of you, even when outside. If she is going inside her kennel the kennel may be too big for her. Dogs will typically not go where they sleep. If it is a big kennel, put boxes in it to take up the excess room giving her only enough room to turn around and sleep. When you do take her out, make sure to use a one word command that she can associate with potty and say that word in a happy voice when she goes and you give her the treat. Good luck!

  5. dogs are territorial. Have a friend bring over a dog and *** somewhere handy on a tree or area of choice. Let your doggie sniff the area after the deed is done. Doggie will go to that area each time to rid her domain of intruder aroma

  6. Commit a weekend to this:

    1. One weekend with NOTHING else to do beside take out puppy.

    2. After Friday night, Puppy will only be fed BY HAND (use a spoon for lil bits of wet food if you must) as reward when it pottys outdoor.

    3. Bait water with yummy tasting stuff (blenderize canned dogfood into water so its slushy water). This will induce your hungry puppy (see number 2) to drink lots.

    4. Attach puppy to your waist via leash. Keep eye on puppy AT ALL TIMES… if you see circling bring puppy out immediately.

    5. Set timer for 20 min. Take pup out every 20 min if it is not sleeping. Reward with praise, play time and food if puppy pottys outside.

    6. If puppy starts to potty (you are watching at ALL TIMES, remember?) swoop puppy up as you say “ACK!! bad puppy! I cannot believe you are doing that in MY HOUSE” Bring puppy that still has to potty outside and STAY with it until it finishes pottying and you can praise/reward.

I’ve trained everything from adult rescues who have never been in a house to very young puppies using this method. Please remember your pup has a bladder about the size of maybe a tablespoon… frequent potty times outside.

  7. First thing you have to do with a dog is us the same dry food. Dry food is the best because it cleans there teeth and it is not full of water. Until house broke, the dog should only be feed once a day at the same time every day. Walk the dog after you feed it. And I mean walk do not just stand there. Then walk him again a half hour after that. You should walk him as many times a day as you can until house broke. Walking helps it pass the food. Walk it in the same place every day. When they smell there own potty it makes them have to go. When the dog goes in the house, clean it up with vinegar. This does 2 things kills the smell+vinegar has a urine bass smell and the dog thinks you r marking this as your turf. When the dog goes in the house put the potty outside where you want it to go. Remember smelling his potty makes him want to go. So no potty smell in the house but lots of potty smell outside. You should have a pin or create just big enough for him to lie down. Most dog will not potty where they lay. Do not put anything in the pin that will soak up ***. When you are not watching your dog, he should be in the pin. If he goes in the house, you should catch him in the act and grab him and yell no then take him outside. Clean it up and take the potty outside. So to rap this up. Walk him as much as you can tell him good boy when he goes outside. When your not watching him keep him it the pin. When he goes inside tell him bad boy and take him outside..

  8. There is no “quick” way to potty train any dog. Patience, time and being consistant is the only way. Make sure the kennel or crate is only big enough so that she only has enough room to turn herself around and lay down. When you catch her trying to go in the house, give her a firm NO, pick her up and take her immedately outside. Stay there, no matter how long it takes, until she goes. Then make a HUGE deal about it. Bring a treat and give it to her right after she goes and give her lots and lots of praise. Be very consistant how when you bring her out. And when you are out with her, don’t just stand there with her. Walk her.

  9. There is no quick fix, but this method has worked with hundreds of dogs. Dogs need “home court advantage.” Meaning, they need to feel comfortable. Does fluffy feel the most comfortable on your furniture and rug? Here’s how to change that.

First, you are going to teach fluffy to be comfortable on newspaper. This is a paramount step towards outdoor training.

PHASE I: Confine fluffy to an area of your home that you can cover with newspaper. When fluffy goes, replace that spot with fresh paper. Do this for a week.

PHASE II: Now fluffy has gotten used to the newspaper and will prefer it for her bathroom needs. Remove some of the newspaper that is in an area that fluffy hasn’t “preferred.” If she does go off the paper, clean the area really well and return to Phase I. Continue until she has been successful for a week.

PHASE III: One week at a time, remove newspaper until there is only a small amount near the door. Fluffy should be going on the paper near the door and not anywhere else in the house. If fluffy has a mistake in the house, return to Phase II. Be sure to cover the area that fluffy visited.

PHASE IV: When fluffy goes to the newspaper by the door, calmly open the door and usher her outside. You know she needs to go. Wait for her to go. Wait 45 minutes if it takes that long. Just stay calm. She can sense tension. Do not go back in until she goes. However, if you absolutely HAVE to go back in, immediately put her in her cage and be ready to clean up the mess.

Eventually, fluffy will go to the door and wait for you to let her out to go potty. She will be more accustomed to the grass than the newspaper.
