Open Question: Why is it always said that ALL male unneutered dogs have behavioral issues? |
People always say that ALL male unneutered dogs mark their territory, roam, hump, are aggressive, bite, etc.My dog does none of this! He was a show dog, but I’ve come to the realization that he isn’t show material (long story). However, as a college student, I don’t want to spend the money, when my dog doesn’t even have any problems/issues.He’s been around females in heat at the breeder’s, and even in high heat, if I tell him to (which I do), he ignores them and sits at my side, no matter how much they “taunt” him.He lifts his leg when he pees outside, but that’s just how he pees. Is he not supposed to pee on a bush? I don’t consider it marking territory, as he doesn’t do it constantly (he only does it to urinate). He’s not aggressive, he doesn’t roam…Heck, I’ve walked him many places, conservation land, fields, towns, parks, trails, by the lake, off leash, and he doesn’t even leave my side.Maybe it’s just my dog’s training, but it really bugs me when people say that ALL male unneutered dogs have those behavioral issues. Am I wrong? I see more dogs without problems than I see dogs with those problems. So, why?Thank you for your opinion rescue member.Sorry to tell you the truth, but my dog HAS refused females in heat because I told him to. Next time I’ll get a video for you, how about that? My dog is obedient, and if I tell him to leave it, he does, no matter how great the temptation. It’s not that I can’t afford to pay for it, but I looked at risks and benefits of neutering, and, economically speaking, the benifits of not neutering him are greater than the risks. Yet, with his great behavior and health, there are still people like you who try to tell me that I’m a bad owner because I don’t neuter my dog (which, we just ended his show career this month, so it just happened). I don’t see how researching pros and cons makes me an irresponsible owner. My dog is not contributing to unwanted litters, and he isn’t going to be abandoned by me, so he won’t be in a shelter. As far as shelter dogs though, yes I have seen them. I’ve volunteered in rescue for many years, and fostered.Shanna: He is very laid back. He is dominant to other dogs if they try to interfere with his position in the pack (me and him), but the most he does is stand over them. He has never bitten another dog, even when chased and bitten. He is not submissive, but he is well trained, and he knows what I will and won’t tolerate.Who would like me to put my unneutered dog back into a pen with a female in high heat so that I can get a video of him ignoring them to prove my story? Is that really what you want? If you don’t believe me fine, but do you realize what you are asking if you really want me to prove it? I’m being responsible by not repeating it, but if you really want me to so that you’ll believe me, I will.My dog will be 3 years old in December. He is also CGC and TDI certified.Shanna: I just realized what you must have been thinking! I would NEVER leave him alone with a female in heat, I know better than that. However, if I am out with him and the female, and I tell him to leave it, he won’t try anything.I’m very sorry for the misunderstanding, I would never leave my dog alone with a female in heat. He’s never alone outside with ANY dog. He’s only alone when he’s inside, locked up, safe and sound.Again, sorry for the misunderstanding, it makes more sense now where you were coming from.Shanna: I also did not say that I put him in a pen with them to test him. I also would never do that. As I said in my other addition, he would never be alone with a female, and I don’t “test” him. However, when he is with me at the breeders (I do yard work, and he was born there), sometimes someone lets a female out without checking if others are out first. I tell him to leave it, and he does, but if they won’t leave him alone, I either put the female away, or put him in a pen.I was not clear apparently, and again, I’m sorry for the misunderstanding.
