Open Question: What to do about my sick dog??? Help!? |
We have a beautiful 4-year old black and white cocker spaniel. The kids LOVE her and I must say I’ve grown attached to her as well. My husband, on the other hand, can’t stand her. His problem is that when we got her from her owner a year ago she was supposedly “potty trained”. I’ve been working with her all year and she finally only messes in the house maybe once a week. The problem is that ever since we got her I noticed that her stool is always liquid. A few months ago I took her to the vet because there was a small trace of blood in her stool and she looked visibly sick (shaking, red eyes, throwing up). They ran $400 worth of tests and found nothing. They put her on steroids, and we’re still on them. She was doing better at first, but for the last week she has begun having bloody stool. I’m not talking traces of blood, but clots and sometimes with no stool present. It will just come out of her without her knowing. To appease my husband I’ve been keeping her mostly outside. However, this morning I let her in to go to the front door to walk the kids to school and it just poured out of her. This has been going on for a week. The vet has already told us she can do nothing without taking a gut biopsy, and we can’t afford that. I’ve called the previous owner and her parents, but they won’t take her back. I’ve listed her on Craig’s List, called the local shelters and tried to contact the Cocker rescue, but they’ve closed. I don’t see an option other than to have her put down as surely she must be suffering losing all of the blood. I guess I don’t know what to do (we were assured she was a healthy dog when we took her), we don’t have the money to fix her, and if I do take her in to be put down how do I tell my kids?????
