Open Question: What are your views on the use of prong collars for dogs? |
We signed up our dog for obedience classes (she’s a lab/bernese mountain dog cross) with a man who came very highly recommended to us. We went to our first class and he told us that his training method is correction via a prong collar, combined with positive reinforcement (praising when she does something good). I expressed my reservations to him about using the prong collar, and he put the collar around my upper arm, and gave it a tug. It didn’t ‘hurt’, but it definately wasn’t comfortable…and he explained that as long as I use the collar the way it was intended (a quick tug, and quick release), it wouldn’t harm the dog at all. I’m wondering what your views on the prong collar are. Have you had success with it? Does it seem inhumane to you? Have you had success with other training methods? I’ve tried the ‘clicker/treat’ strictly positive reinforcement approach, with very limited success so far. My dog is getting very big very quickly, and she needs to learn that I’m the one in control, not her. I have two small children, so she definately needs to learn some manners. Any advice is appreciated.
