Open Question: What are some good training methods to keep dog from jumping up? |
We have a 5 month old puppy who gets VERY excited when we come home from being gone all day. He jumps up on us uncontrollably and it is, as you can imagine a very annoying habit. He’s crated all day, so I know he’s excited to get out, but he will be a large dog when full grown and I want to stop this now. I’ve tried the following and it’s not worked:~ No eye contact with him & no talking to him. Trying to ignore and just open his crate and let him outside to go to the bathroom.~ Reprimanding. I think this just adds to the “excitement” of the moment and makes things worse.~ When he’s this excited, he won’t respond to “sit” or hand commands that he usually is eager to do.I think part of the problem is that when we got him, the kids were home for summer vacation so he was used to always having someone in the house with him. Now that he’s home all day, seeing someone first thing is so exciting and he’s been lonely all day. I understand his eagerness, but it’s no excuse for bad behavior.Any suggestions on methods to try to break this habit. Thanks!
