Open Question: Stray male dog with aggressive attitude toward other pet.?

I took in a male unaltered stray dog. I have had him for about 11 months, about three weeks ago he attacked one of my other dogs, male neutered dog. This has nevered happened before. I have two other male dogs (inside dogs all three of these) also neutered that he does not bother. Figure it is an alpha dog thing going on… He also stays outside with my other outside female spayed dog, and they get along fine, might be where she is bigger and female. Was going to take stray and have neutered last week, but he was terrified to leave my fenced in back yard. If I tried to pick him up he growled. I got a vet prescribed sedative called ace and did not help. I do believe that before he came to my house he had been through some rough times. He was terrified of everything. I would really like to keep him, he has won a place in my heart, and I don’t think anybody else would take the time to try and help him. But I also have a two and half year old grandsob, and I don’t like aggressive dogs. He has never attempted to do anything toward him, but with a dog you never know in advance.. I live in a rural area, no obedeince school or training available. If somebody could recommend a good book on training that is simple, easy to understand, and really works, would appreciate it. He is English Springer Spaniel and Austrailian Shepherd mix, about two or maybe three years old. Very odd, but beautiful to me.. Please help…. Here is some photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/15838790@N07/2880372627/I don’t know if the attack was provoked by other dog or not just seen fight when stray had other dog down with a death grip on the back of his neck, made some bad teeth punctures on my other male. Daughter had to hit dog with a lawn chair to get him to release, all that was readily available. I had his mouth trying to pry it loose and he never attempted to hurt me. No vets that make house calls here. Also, planned to have him fully checked and vaccinations done if I ever get him to the vet.
