Open Question: My dog gets scared and hides at night.?

Another person, Kiki, asked a question a couple of months ago about her dog getting scared and hiding at night. I have the same problem. My dog is now 8. For the first six years of her life she slept on her bed in my room. When she was around six totally out of the blue she started to have anxiety at night, panting, whining and really stressing about the fact that she had to go to bed. I took her to the vet and he said to totally ignore her otherwise you are validating her stressful feelings. This worked somewhat as now she doesnt often have the panic attacks but she does spend most nights in the basement. Interestingly it is worse when my husband is not home. Even though she was my dog first and is closest to me, she panics less when he’s home – she usually stays up with him until he goes to bed and then gets into her bed. When he’s away she spends the evening and most of the night in the basement. She is well trained and very loved. This behaviour came totally out of the blue. I wonder if it’s a sign of submission? Maybe she takes it as a privilege to sleep her the alpha? There are no obedience problems in the house. Her daytime routine has stayed the same and in the day she seems like her happy and healthy self. Kiki mentioned ghosts…this has occurred to me, it really seems she is seeing something that I don’t!
