Open Question: Is there anything that REALLY takes the smell of pet urine out of carpeting? ?

I am training a puppy and pet sitting my mom’s elderly, sometimes incontinent dog as well. I had a dog years ago who in her old age became incontinent, and the previous owner of the house had several pets too. The solutions from the pet store have NOT worked - in fact, in some spots, seem to make the smell worse! We’ve already ripped up the carpets in part of the house but I don’t want to live on plywood throughout the house until we can afford new carpeting AND the puppy is trained and the geezer is no longer with us. Please help!
