Open Question: Is is okay to punish a dog?

I’ve been reading heaps about Jack Russell training and most books and websites say to punish the puppy.Normally by picking it up by the scruff of its neck and shaking a little or saying a firm no when they are off the ground.Alot of them also say that if they squeal or yelp that is good since they are making the connection.None of them say to hit the dog with a hand or lead as they may develop a hand or lead phobia. Also alot say that this only applies to some breeds such as a Jack Russell because of their strong need to be dominate, is this correct in your opinion? They always say that hitting a dog is abuse.I think you have the wrong idea of shaking, I don’t mean baby shaking I mean a firm one shake accompined by a NO!I think it should be added I essentially have a “pack”.4 Jack Russells.I think that does need to be taken into consideration.
