Open Question: Is Debarking Ethical? |
A troll question did make me think of something. At a recent AKC agility show, I saw numerous Shelties that were debarked. I’ve also seen dogs out & about who had it done – usually breeds that are known to be barkers.1. If you love a breed, but it’s super barky, is it ethical to debark it if done humanely by a vet?2. Under what circumstances is it ethical? If it’s a matter of losing your home, getting rid of the dog, or cutting out the barking and all other training methods have failed? 3. Should the AKC be stiffening their stance on debarking competition dogs? Thanks! For the people who think it’s unethical – is it more ethical to dump the dog at the pound because he’s barking too much? So your apartment complex says”Stop the barking or move”Your choices areMove (but you cant afford it)Get rid of the dog (but you love her)orDebark herYou’d get rid of the dog? Even the ASPCA says that with declawing, they’d rather have it done and have the cat in a safe home than to have the cat dumped at a shelter. Just playing devil’s advocate because it doesn’t seem that everyone read the entire question and looked at the ramifications.I appreciate everyone’s answers. Thumbs up to all who answered the question thoughtfully! : )
