Open Question: How to pick out a guard dog from an animal shelter?

My lifestyle warrants a dog and I almost need one to feel safer while I’m home alone. When I had dogs when I was younger we got them as puppies and spent so much time with them they were just naturally protective. This time I’d like to get a dog at a shelter that has already been house trained, so how do I know if a dog will be a good guard dog/protective? I don’t want him to be aggressive, just bark when someone comes to the door… check out random noises for me haha stuff like that. So… how can you tell if a dog will make a good guard dog? Thanks so much! :)
