Open Question: How do I get my dogs rough play under control? |
I have a 14mo old german shepherd/husky/pit bull mix. I got him from the local pound when he was about 9 months old. he has done very well in his training of basic commands such as sit, lay, come, and sometimes heel. he also does very well with tricks like beg, shake, high five, kiss, hug, spin.. point being he is very trainable.. I have taken him to the dog park nearly 5-6 times a week since i got him so he is socalized. From what i know his previous owners had 2 other dogs. Lately he has been “wrestling” very hard with other dogs. Some dogs do not like this and typically try to run away but my dog just chases them and tackles them to the ground again. The dogs that do wrestle with him usually get pinned down and my dog starts nawing at their legs, neck, ears, pretty much anything he can reach at the time. He has NEVER broken the skin on a dog but it worries me that he gets so into the wrestling game. It also worries me that he does not back off when the other dog yelps. If i feel it is getting out of control i grab his collar and start running towards the other side of the dog park. More often than not he follows and thats then end of that. However, sometimes he will watch the other dog intently and randomly race toward them and tackle them again. He doesnt seem to get the usual “i dont want to play” signs and he does not do this to every dog. I at first thought it was all the unneutered males but he is neutered and there are some unneutered males that he plays just fine with. I am just wondering what i can do to stop or decreease this behavior. I know dogs tackle eachother but he doesnt let up when its “break” time. Please help.
