How to stop a dog from needless barking? |
tweetybird asked:
When my dog is outside or inside, she will bark when other dogs bark or hears loud noises. When she is outside and the neighbor’s dogs are just lying in their own yard, my dog will just look at one in particular and bark and bark. Sometimes, it seems she barks to just hear herself bark. I have gone outside and put my hands around her mouth and say “No Bark” and sometimes I make her come inside for awhile. It seems to work sometimes … she does not like the hands-on effect nor does she like to come inside while the other dogs are outside. However, there are times when she is barking outside and I’m inside and I’ll call her name and say “No Bark” and she’ll stop for awhile … until I have to make her come inside. ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Well, it may sound a bit cruel, but you can get a shock collar, for your dog, and when she barks, it will deliver a small shock, and it is mostly for training, just for that problem. You can remove it when you don’t care if she barks, and put it on when for times you want her not to bark. I used that for my dog and it worked rather well.
I have a little device called a “dog dazer”. It can be found in some merchandise catalogs. It’s harmless but it is uncomfortable for the dog to hear. I just point it in the dog’s direction, press the button for 3 seconds and tell her in a firm voice to stop and it usually works. It may take a couple of times, but your dog will soon learn what you want it not to do anymore.
Excessive barking can be grinding on your nerves. I personally would not use any method that would cause the dog any pain. On the National Geographic channel the show the “Dog Whisperer” has proved that this behavior can be changed with proper guidance for the owner and dog. Personally, Cesar Milan is one of my heroes he can “fix” any problem any dog owner may have he is amazing I recommend anybody that owns a dog must watch his show, check it out:
he also has videos and a book out and has helped thousands all over best of luck
Those dog collars ARE CRUEL,.. have heard dogs yelp with sudden jolt,.. I’d like a human put on their neck and try it!
Try socializing you dog more, to a dog park, etc. She seems lonely for canine companionship. Socialize her.
I have a yappy dog who yaps consistantly,… “quiet” in a firm voice sometimes work with her.
Your dog seems to want the attention of the neighbor’s dogs and trying to communicate. Does she play with any other dogs?
What breed is she? Some breeds are just barkers. You can try a rolled up newspaper and slapping on you hand in front of her face, everytime she goes on,… dogs do not like startling noises and firmly say “no” at the same time..
Be consistant.
This is an excellent method: “Retraining Manic Alert Barking”
Get a citronella spray collar! It’s a No Bark collar that causes no shocks – no pain. Works on the same premise. When the collar senses vibration on the vocal chords, it emits a spray of citronella which spooks the dog (causing them to stop usually immediately). The odor (while pleasant to me) is disliked by dogs.
It worked wonders for me! I rarely use it at home anymore. But I still take it when I go camping and I know we’ll be crossing paths with countless other dogs.
They’re available from many sources and different manufacturers as well. Here’s the one I have:
Replacement batteries and mini aerosol cans of citronella are also available.
First, what type of dog do you have? Some breeds, like Border Collies, which are high energy, bark because they are bored. By the sounds of it, your dog might be a social dog. If so, and if you have a dog that is friendly with others I’d suggest getting into something like agility or flyball. Both are great for exercising your dog. This would also allow you to spend one on one time with your pet as well as giving it an opportunity to socialise with other animals and people. You and your dog could both have fun.
