How sophisticated a form of communication is dog barking? |
jammin_772001 asked:
I live in a community with lots of dogs. I have a German Shepherd that I keep beside my house. And she rarely reacts to the other dogs when they are barking even when there is a lot of barking. Today I walked to my neighbors house, out of her sight, and as far as I know she didnt even know I was outside, and I was barked at by another dog. As soon as I was being barked at she started to bark back and getting very hyper. From my experience with her not barking it seemed to me that she knew the I was the person being barked at. Anyway thanks in advance.

German Shepards are very smart dogs and they are very in tune with what is going on around them, that is why police use them for police dogs. She knows what is going on.
not very advanced… barks convey the animal’s emotion and/or desire for attention
this has some info for you:
Barking is their language and their way to communicate!! I guess in a way its like English to us! Dogs are very smart, people dont give them enough credit.
Very sophisticated. If you want more info go to a Library and see if they have ” Dogspeak”. Its in an animal language understanding series.
It conveys fear, playfulness, annoyance, anger, excitement. It also attracts attention or gives an early warning for danger. They also use yips and growls, and various pitches, to convey their message. The barking is not instinctual, though. Wolves hardly ever bark. It has been suggested that barking is more an evolved way to communicate with us, the humans who domesticated them.
Use this if you want to learn more:)
Even more sophisticated is their body language. Every move they make around another means something.
It’s a complicated language, but one easy to understand if you try.

Here are some real-life dogs that have their body language meanings written beside the pictures:

SOPHISTICATED?????
LMAO!!!
Too funny.
Barking is NOT “communication”…it’s just an animal REACTION to stimuli.
