How long does it take to potty train a puppy?

potty train puppy
Elizabeth O asked:

We are potty training our puppy and it seems we are getting nowhere. We have to pad train her because we have no back yard. When we take her to the pad she will go for us. Or if we lock her in the kitchen she will go on the pad, but when she isn’t lock up she won’t go to the pad by herself. We have had her for 3weeks. Will she finally get it? At night she sleeps in the crate but I don’t want to lock her in the crate all day, so I baby gate the kitchen and she stays in there when we are gone.

  1. Well it all depnds if the puppy likes it or not My dog wants us to let him out when he wants to potty. And he plays a bit then comes back. You could have asked my grandad since it was his dog.

  2. She will get it just keep the pads in the same spot… get her in the routine of going to the same spot everytime… it will take a month or so just remember puppies can’t hold it long at all…

  3. She’ll definetaly get it soon if u keep training her.Wait another 2 weeks,see what happends.Best Luck!!!!! ~Danielle~

  4. Crate training can be done in as little as 7 days. Lots of intensive training. Some dogs may take up to 7 months. Some dogs never learn it.

  5. Seems to me that ye have already trained her perfectly!
I believe she is doing this for attention! She wants ye to be there petting her as she pee’s to pet her! Move her pad somewhere closer to where ye are. Then when she see’s ye she should go as she looks at ye. Make sure to reward her every time she pee’s by herself in the pad. At the moment, she knows by doing it on the floor, someone will give her attention by cleaning it up.

  6. You must have patience. She will get it eventually. Try not to clean up her accidents when she is near — in nature the mom cleans up the litter area, so she will think wherever you clean-up is okay to go. Take her for a walk after she exercises or eats(wait awhile to see how long it takes for activity to bring on *** pee) then, time it so that you naturally have her out when she goes so that you can give lots of positive reinforcement.

  7. I have 2 Pekingese puppies, and they still at 6 months aren’t totally potty trained. They are doing pretty good. It’s good that you keep her in the kitchen when you’re gone. What I’ve done is when they go outside, praise them, get all excited about it. They think this is cool or something.
    Hope this helps. :)
