How long does it take to crate train a small dog? |
Lilac asked:
I am considering getting a dog how long on average do you think the crate training process would be for a small dog (yorkie mix or something around there)? Also for potty training in the winter do you suggest paper training until spring or go right to outside?

It depends, on the do, but usually mayb a month, as king as you stay continually doing the same routine day an day the dog will pick up on it =]
well it depends on what kind of dog. But if it is just born it will be harder. Hope you get a dog
It will take a long time because my dog well it took for the trainner almost one year.
It depends on the dog, the consistency, and the lifestyle. If you are very consistent and have an average learner and can frequently take your dog our or have a good potty schedule you should stick with a minimum of four weeks.
there is no exact time, it depends on the dog. but it shouldnt take that long if you are consistant with him or her.
with regards potty training, when we got our dog every time he had something to eat, we took him outside and said “go wee wee’s or pooh poohs” and he got used to those words and commands that within 2 weeks he was completely potty trained and to this day [hes 10 now] he still goes on command , funny enough we have done the same with our cat and it works with them also [hes an inside puss ] try it , its worth a go.
Depends on the dog. We got our puppy at 10 weeks… and started the crate training at about 6 months (when he was jumping out of his play pen). The training only took really… 2 minutes. He took to it like a duck to water.
depends if you are hme all day or not. my bichon puppy was litter trained before (we got her at 11 weeks) and she knew she wasn’t allowed to go in the house so it took only about a week to train her but if your dog has to start in step 1 it’ll take much longer. If you want a puppy crate train it from the beginning it’ll be easier. i don’t suggest paper training at all. You can try litter training it but pups usually have to be trained since they just start walking to get used to it. (its possible just takes much longer if done later) good luck =]
It takes different amounts of time depending on the personality / type of dog. I have a Maltese x Shih Tzu, Ella, and she took to the crate within a few days as she is very easy-going and eager to please.
I think a Yorkie mix would be wonderful and with consistant training and reinforcement for good behaviour, it should pick up the training relatively quickly. Just make sure that you are consistant! Most training takes a long time when the owner does not follow through with the same working methods when the dog protests. Just find a way that works, perhaps get some professional advice when purchasing your crate, and be positive with your dog.
I am in Queensland, Australia and we don’t get very cold winters here but I would suggest you use your instincts depending on the day. For a small dog / puppy, if it was very cold outside you could obviously use the training paper. At night when the temperature would drop or if it was raining through the day, we always made the pads available for Ella but it is an important step to get them used to going to the toilet outside. Just do what you think is best.
The time it takes a dog to be trained all depends on how well the owner’s techniques are. A dog who had good training will learn fast. Training takes a lot of time, and patience.
For a small dog I suggest paper training all the way. Trying to train the puppy to go outside and inside may confuse the puppy and cause them to use the bathroom all over the place. Small dogs tend to not want to go outside when it’s wet. But it’s your call.
In “crate train”, do you mean train it to be in a crate or cage during the day? Just start them off right away, and they will get used to it. My dog (schnoodle, 9 lbs) was trained young and he is very comfortable in it. If possible, you or someone else should stop by maybe once in the day to take it potty.
I wouldn’t suggest potty training on paper. You’r dog will get used to doing this and may see it’s cage as a place to potty. if it sees it’s cage as “home” it will be happy to be in there with a bed, toys, and water. Then when it goes outside, it will know exactly what it’s supposed to do.
Good luck, potty training is hard. Make sure you punish it every time it messes up, so it’s know you’re consistent, other wise it will be a difficult road ahead… but their cute little face is all worth it!
crate training can be as fast as a few days to a few weeks for the puppy to become use to it. As for newspaper training you can take a young puppy who has shots outside in the winter instead of just using newspapers. I have a four month old pom who has been going outside even in colder weather. You have to remember to take them out first thing in the morning, after they eat, every two hours when woke and before bedtime
