How do I stop my dog barking? |
djembe asked:
I have a 4 year old Maltese he never had a problem barking at our old house. Since we have moved there is a dog over the fence that barks and so my dog barks back constantly and paws at the fence. I have to physically prise him away from the fence when I go out to tell him off otherwise he does not listen to me. I would like to teach my dog not to bark even if the other dog does.

i think you should take him to a trainer or a camp.
I am not sure what they are called but you can get a collar that gives the dog a little shock when they bark too much. It will not greatly harm your dog. Once he has learned that if he continues to bark he will be punished he will not bark and you can take the collar off and see how he does. Good luck MoNoPoLy
tell him “no” or get 1 of the collars that sparks him to not let him bark but make sure its not to powerful other wise he could get sevierly hurt
try a spray bottle with water. i use this on my beagles who howl all the time. spary him when he barks, everytime and he will learn not to bark. even my stubborn beagles learned to not bark and all i do now is show them the water bottle… silence all day. plus its more humane than the shock collar.
Good Luck!!
That is like teaching a Non-stop blabbermouth employee to shut-up after IT has worked for you 10 years talking. You can’t all of a sudden to tell IT to shut-up….. It will never stop until u remove the critter from the area.
OK….now…..you make one sound for the dog that indicates …”shut the hell up.” Mine is shhhshhh! She knows immediately to stop the crap.
Come up with a word that the dog understands.
When u let the dog outside….follow the dog out there if it is barking. Say ur word and lean over and place ur hand nicely over the dog’s mouth. Continue this a few times. If the hound persists. Pop him gently with the paper that u took with you and return the dog back to the house. Do this everytime and eventually the dog will understand that if the behavior continues, the dog will not go outside.
Be CONSISTENT.
Change ur demeanor when the dog is acting wrong, the dog will see a difference in you and will understand. When the dog behaves correctly, you MUST reward the dog with hugs and kisses.
My dog CLEARLY understands that when I am ignoring her, something is wrong. A dog knows when something is wrong. I have had my Boston Terrier for 8 months and this dog is very intelligent…probably more than most children.
Good luck with the critter!!
Jamie D has the right answer. I’ve used the spray bottle with my toy poodles that wouldn’t quit barking & the spray worked great. Shock collars are a last resort & I’d never ever use them on a little dog like yours. They are inhumane.
