asked:

Many dogs today suffer from constant scratching and this can cause much dismay and annoyance from pet owners especially if they are their wits end on what is causing the itch. Some dogs end up scratching themselves raw which could lead to infections as well. Included are some suggestions on what could be causing your pet to scratch constantly and remedies recommended.

1) Fleas and Ticks

This is one of the most common cause of concern for many pet owners. There are many commercially produced monthly medications to ward off these pesky insects. However, I find that the best method to keep fleas and ticks off is ensuring that your pet has a good immune system. This is the best way to keep the fleas and ticks off your dogs for good! These pests do not like to feed on healthy dogs. They tend to go for animals with weaker immune system. Regular use of anti-fleas spray is good prevention especially if you are still in the process of building up their immune system. A more natural flea spray would contain ingredients such as neem oil or lemon grass oil. If your dog has a serious infestation with fleas and require immediate attention, bring him to the vet to address the situation or you can drip Frontline, Accurate or fipronil medication. Use a flea comb to comb out as much fleas as you can. Avoid bringing them to grassy area especially during fleas and ticks season when building up their immune system.

To remove ticks, care must be taken to ensure the tick bite do not irritate the skin after you remove it. You can numb the ticks with clove based products or isopropyl alcohol. Once the tick bite is off the skin, it will be easier to pull him off without damaging fido skin. Spray on or apply wound disinfectant on the affected area to prevent skin infection.

New Site

asked:

Many of us dog owners get really amazed to see our dogs scratching away to glory in spite of the fact that there is not a single flea on its body! This is one thing that most dog owners will know. Many a time, our dogs just keep on scratching their skin although they do not have fleas or any other parasites. This is one thing that all dog owners have to be careful about. Continuous itching without any reason might have larger health implications.

This incessant itching can highly be an early symptom of dermatitis. Dermatitis is similar to fever in human beings. When we have fever, we just start sneezing like crazy or have congestions. But in case of dogs, their skin becomes itchy and they keep on scratching their skin. Fever in dogs happens generally when they inhale a large amount of pollen.

If you notice, you will see that your dog starts itching more during the months of August and September. This is a time when you need to take extra care of your beloved pet. Pets become especially sensitive to things around them during these months. Thus, this is the time when you have to look out for Dermatitis because your dog will be highly susceptible to it.

New Site

asked:

Have you seen your dogs coat go from shiny and healthy to dull and bare? Does your dog scratch and lick at himself constantly? We dog owners have probably all seen our pets go through this at some point. Although fleas are often the culprit, there are many other causes for skin and coat problems in dogs. Causes of skin and coat problems include, environmental, nutritional, allergic, neurogenic, infectious and parasitic. This article will discuss parasitic skin problems.

One canine skin condition is mange. External parasites cause mange. There are 2 types of mange, Demodex mange and Sarcoptic mange. Both types are caused by mites. Demodex mange is most common in young dogs and an outbreak is attributed to an insufficient immune system. Poor nutrition and environment can also trigger an outbreak.

So, you’re probably wondering where this parasite came from and how it got on your dog. Veterinarians think all dogs have a small number of these mites living in their skin and certain factors will cause them to become active in some dogs. A healthy dog with a resistant immune system will usually be able to fight the infestation and it will not reappear.

New Site

asked:

It is common to observe that dogs pant and scratch, one would definitely wants to know why they do that. One cannot imagine a dog that does not pant and they have a charming way of doing it. This is what they do if they don’t sniff or bark. When dogs scratch, it must be the itch and while it is the single cause of scratching which is common in both humans and dogs but there are many reasons why dogs itch.

Too much importance is not given to dog’s panting since it is the most natural thing in the world. Whether one likes it or not but there are certain episodes of panting that may not give a good feeling. There are various reasons because of which dogs pant.

Dogs mostly pant to regulate temperature. They pant because they do not sweat and they cannot regulate their body temperature in any other way so panting it a natural way of cooling themselves.

New Site

With so many options of dog harnesses and dog collars on the market today, dog owners share the same thought – what is the best harness or collar for dogs that have a tendency to pull during their walks? As the hunt for the best gear for dog pulling begins, the first decision is whether to get a dog collar or dog harness.

The decision on a collar or harness for a dog that pulls is really quite simple. First of all, let’s discuss collars. Whether your dog is large or small, their neck and throat area is very delicate. If they are always pulling on their walks, the force of their pull will cause their collar to constrict and may potentially, and even permanently, damage your dog’s neck and trachea. For that reason, the collar is not recommended for dogs who pull on their walks.

asked:

Dogs are individual creatures. No two dogs are alike. Through a combination of genetics, circumstances or development one dog may be assertive while another is timid.

Dogs in the ‘alpha’ pack leader position are assertive. These types of dogs will take bones or toys away from other dogs or be the first of the pack to enter a room and demand a great deal of attention after having done so. On the other hand, a timid dog will always eat, enter and play last. These dogs simply remain quiet and wait to be noticed.

At first glance, timid dogs may not be in need of training as much focus is placed on deterring unwarranted behaviors. Their counterparts, assertive dogs, are more suitable for training. These dogs are leashed and pulled back during walking exercises. Trained not to chase the neighbors cat is also endured.

Unlike their rowdy companions, timid dogs are the last to exit, do not display a tendency to dig or other undesirable behaviors. These behaviors are carried over into personal space. Timid dogs distance themselves inside the home from other dogs, whether assertive or not.

dog begging

My Mom and I were sitting outside on TGIF;s patio eating in South Beach Miami on Jan 2011, when a dog walked up to us and pawed for money. He hit up every persons table with no luck. I decided that his hard work deserved a dollar, and as soon as I gave it to him he walked off to his owner- a homeless man who shouted “good job buddy- bring me the bucket.” Now that is a smart homeless man. At least my Mom had a good time visiting from Canada.

new site
