It was originally used for hunting with a retriever. You’d want your dog right on your hip while walking so it didn’t scare up game prematurely. This only introduces to dog to getting into the original position. A truly heeled dog will follow you on your hip as well.
And what you do when your dog is not interested in any treat or food when going out?
I recently saw a video where when your dog is pulling to plant your feet and have the dog come back, in the course of a 30 min walk I had my dog heeling and when she would pull I would plant my feet and make her come back the exact way he demonsrated.
well ive taught it to my jack russell terrier & he walks naxt to me fine without me having to worry, it took me ages to get him to walk next to me waithout a leash though, i had to trust him & show him that it was a plasant experience coming back to me & walking by my side off leash.
i dont really get that command y would i use it?
would this work on a small dog such as a Bugg(Boston Terrier X Pugg)? One major problem I’m having with my dog is that when I take him for walks he always tugs on the leash & doesn’t quite understand heel yet. Would this be a good thing to teach him?
My Wheaten is 4 mos old and I recently discovered the amazing dog guy. Watching his videos has helped me and Casey to more productive training. She is pretty young so I imagine it will take time before she is a finished and well mannered dog but now I feel we’re going down the right path.
its very helpful to have this videos for a foundation in the journey to train my ams staff
are you some kind of an idiot? thx
more, more, more..bravo….
can a fighting pitbull learn the sit, stay command? tnx
eric when should you start fazing out the lead? my dogs do it great on the lead but there not sure without it.
hey can you do video of how can anybody trust it dog without its leash
When he has the shoe in his mouth, just tell him ”no” in a serious but not high voice and give him a chew toy to chew on and place ur shoes away from him. (practicing it numerous times helps as well with stones and sticks) to teach ur dog to heel. put him on a long leash and call his name and say heel. pull him til he comes and give a treat and/or congratulate. Never EVER call the pup to punish him. that way he will associate the word heel only to positiveness. I hope I was helpful. -D.Razor

Hi, I’m trying to teach my in-laws Golden Retriever to heel so we can have nice walks w/no pulling. I got the Gentle Leader but if I give him slack, in 3 seconds he’s ahead of me. He doesn’t seem to mind the ongoing pull of the GL unless there is a sudden, sharp tug. And I freq have to stop and remind him to heel. Could he be a slow learner? Any suggestions?
That’s a good idea, provided the dog won’t fall of the wall and if you can find such wall close to where you live. Thanks for reply.
I used to practice with small dogs on a stone wall. With the dog on the wall I could do the exercise with the dog right next to me. I also do training sessions on a table with small dogs.
How do you do this with 6 inch high yorkie puppy that is very excitable and constantly pulls?
Just like all the books and videos. I have five dogs that, individually, heel and auto sit when I stop. But, put them all together… CHAOS! Someone needs to show how to train the pack owner.
Thanks yorkiefamily! You can watch more training videos at my website:
